NORRBOTTEN POETRY SLAM

Norrbotten Poetry Slam (NPS) are competitions in spoken word poetry, where poets perform with their own poems. We arrange a number of slams each year, where the poets with the highest rankings are invited to the Norrbotten finals. The four poets with the highest ranking in the finals will be offered to participate in the Swedish nationals, which this season are held in Malmö in june.

What is poetry slam?

Poetry slam are competitions in spoken word poetry, where poets perform with their own poems in front of an audience. Jury groups are selected from volounteers from the audience. After each poem, the jury groups judge the performance based on the poem/text and the performance in itself, giving out points from 1,0 to 10,0. An MC hosts the slam by presenting the rules and the competing poets, keeping track of turns and entertaining the audience between the poems.

It is also common to have a professional spoken word poet or other artist performe during the slam, outside of the competition.

Norrscens poetry slam are usually entertaining and appreciated by both poets, jurys and audience. Poetry slams are a unique opportunity to hear the voices, stories and perspectives from different parts of society, voices that might not be lifted in many other places.

All of our events are free, and as a competing poet living in Norrbottens län you can also get funding from us for travels when participating in a slam.

I wanna compete!

To participate in NPS you will need 3 different poems/texts that you've written yourself. The poems can be in any language, but needs to be less than 3 minutes and 9 seconds long, or you will loose points from the total score of the poem.

RULES

PROPS - You are not allowed to bring any props on stage. That goes for muscial instruments or exaggerated stage costumes as well.

TEXT - It's OK to bring your text with you on stage; written on a piece of paper, a mobile phone or tablet i.e. Make sure that you don't use your text medium as props though - that can be cause to disqualification.

QUOTES - Quotes are allowed, as long as they are a maximum of 10% of the entire poem, and as long as it is made clear that they are, in fact, quotes. This can be achieved either by using really famous quotes or by some how informing the audience and MC that you are using a quote.

POINTS - Volounteering jury groups from the audience judges each poem directly after the reading, based on both the text itself as well as on performance. Points are distributed from 1,0 to 10,0. The points from each jury group are then added to a total score.

TIME LIMIT - Each poem can be maximum 3 minutes and 9 seconds. For longer poems, a points deduction is made from your total score, taking away 0,5 points per 10-second interval. Time is kept by the secretary, and you time will start as soon as you say your first word or in any other, obvious way begin your performance.
